What Somebody Finds When They Look You Up

October 15, 2026

Before somebody calls you, they look you up. That has been true for years. What has changed is how much they can find out before you have any idea they were looking.

A referral gets checked. A sign call gets checked. The name on a mailing gets typed into a search box, and whatever comes back either supports the decision to contact you or quietly ends it. You never hear about the ones that ended.

Invisible is not the same as absent

Most agents have a website, a profile on their brokerage site, and an account or two on social media. That is presence. It is not the same thing as being findable, and the two get confused regularly.

The question is not whether your name exists somewhere online. It is what appears when somebody searches for the thing you want to be known for, in the area you work in, without using your name at all.

A name search and a subject search are different tests

Search your own name and you will almost certainly find yourself. That test is comforting and it proves very little, because the person doing it already knew who you were and what they were looking for.

The harder test is the subject search. Somebody who has never heard of you, asking about your market, your property type, your area, or the specific situation you handle better than most. Whether you appear anywhere in that answer is an entirely different question, and for a lot of agents the honest answer is no.

Consistency does more work than volume

The instinct is to respond by producing more. More posts, more platforms, more of everything, until the whole thing collapses under its own weight in about six weeks and is quietly abandoned.

What tends to matter more is that the same subject, described the same way, appears in several places that point at each other. A site that says clearly what you do. A business profile that matches it. A professional profile that matches both. Content that keeps returning to the same ground rather than covering something different every week. Repetition across places is what makes a subject look like yours.

Answering the questions people actually ask

There is a simple source of material that most agents overlook, which is the set of questions they already answer on the phone every week. Those are the questions people type into a search box, and they are the ones you can answer better than any general article can, because you can answer them for your specific market rather than in the abstract.

Whether that becomes a blog, a video, a page on your site or something else entirely is a matter of what you will actually sustain. The impressive format that gets abandoned in November is worth less than the plainer one that is still going in March.

A question to sit with this week

Open a private browser window and search for the thing you want to be known for, in the area you work, without typing your name anywhere in it. Look at what comes back.

Then ask yourself the more useful question. Not why you are not there, but what somebody would have to find in order to conclude that you were the obvious person to call. Write that down before you decide what to build.

Where to take this next

Deciding what you want to be findable for, before spending anything on being findable, is worth talking through. If that is a conversation worth having, you can book a discovery call.
